The Eighty-Eighth Pennsylvania Volunteers Battles

1862

In 1862 after having served in garrison duties in forts around Washington D. C. and Provost Duty in Alexandria Virginia the Eighty-Eighth Pennsylvania was ordered to field duty in the Army of Virginia where it participated in the 1862 Shennandoah Valley Campaign.    

Attached to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 3rd Corps, Army of Virginia.

The 2nd Division was under the command of Brigadier General James B. Ricketts.
 
The 2nd Brigade  consisted of the 26th NY, 94th NY, 90th PA and 88th PA and was under the command of Brigadier General Zealous B. Tower.

The 88th PA was commanded by Col. George P. McLean until August 25, 1862 when he left the regiment due to illness, at that time his brother Lt. Colonel Joseph McLean took command of the regiment until his death on Chinn Ridge during the Battle of 2nd Bull Run / Manassas, August 30, 1862. Major George Gile then took command of the regiment.
