watercolor (or crayon) on laid paper, ca. 1862. was produced by Cpl. Henry C. Richardson, Co. C for Private George H. Tolan also of Co. C for Tolan to present to his parents.
The drawing measures approximately 9 1/4 x 7 inches and depicts Miss Columbia with the 88th PVI Regimental Flag and shows the battles in which the 88th fought in 1862.
Richardson was wounded at 2nd Bull Run, August 30, 1862; Wounded at Laurel Hill, May 8, 1864; Mustered out, September 6, 1864 at expiration of term.
Toland was wounded at Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862; Wounded at Gettysburg (ball in eye and out mouth); Transferred to Veteran reserve Corps November 15, 1863; Discharged, date unknown.

Joseph A. Hock enlisted September 12, 1861 from Berks County PA. and was mustered into the United States Service at Philadelphia, PA as a private, to serve Three years in Capt. G. W. Knabb's Company A, 88th Regiment Pennsylvania Vol. infantry under the command of Col. G. P. McLane.
The Regiment was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac and Comrade Hock shares in the fortune of the Regiment in the battles of Cedar Top August 9, 1862, Thoroughfare Gap August 28, 1862, 2nd Bull Run august 30, 1862, Chantilly September 1, 1862, Antietam September 17, 1862, Fredericksburg December 13, 1862, Mud March January 20-24, 1863, Chancellorsville May 14, 1863, Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863.
He was discharged January 25, 1864 at Culpepper, VA on account of re-enlisting as a Veteran in the same company and Regiment under Capt. Henry Whiteside and Col. G. P. McLane to serve three years on during the war and engaged at Wilderness May 5, 1864, Laural Hill May 7, 1864, Spotsylvania May 9-15, 1864, North Run May 23-27, 1864, Bethesda Church May 26, 1864, White Oak Swamp June 12, 1864, Petersburg June 18, 1864 and Weldon R.R. August 18, 1864 where he was captured and held prisoner of war until Dec. 7, 1864 when he escaped from Valnago Mills Feb6, 1865.
He rejoined the regiment and was engaged at Hatchers Run March 25, 1865, Appomattox April 9, 1865.
Finally and Honorably Discharged June 12, 1865 at Washington D.C. by General Order No.33.
Promoted to Sergeant May 1, 1865.
